Why did the Aztecs think it was necessary to make blood sacrifices to the sun god, Huitzilopochtli?

Huitzilopochtli was the God of Sun, and it was believed that he was constantly fighting against darkness, and required help in his struggle. The Aztecs believed that without the sacrifice which gave nutrition to the God the sun, and with it the world,  would only be able to survive for 52 years.
