Dhimmis under the Umayyad Empire were the Jews and the Christians. The term dhimmi is a historical term which indicates any non Muslim citizens living within a Muslim Empire. Dhimmi is a term that actually means protected person. Dhimmis in the Umayyad Empire were excluded from performing certain duties and political rights reserved for the Muslims. They were able to enjoy almost equal rights as the Muslims. The Dhimmis in Umayyad Empire also had to pay certain taxes that were not applicable for the Muslims.
