Why were some kings of Ghana so wealthy in the Early African Civilizations?

Ghana basically sat above a gold mine between the 9th and 11th centuries C.E. 
They used the gold for trading other than self-need as well. They traded for livestock, cloth, and tools. The kings of Ghana also got wealthy off of the taxes from traders who traveled through and when they left Ghana.
